Why the Term "Credencing"
The term credencing emphasizes belief as an active, graded, updateable process.
Believing as a Process
The word belief can sound static: a box checked or unchecked. Credencing emphasizes the ongoing act of assigning, maintaining, revising, and sometimes defending confidence.
The term keeps attention on movement. Confidence changes as evidence changes, as interpretation improves, and as pressure on the agent shifts.
Why Not Just "Belief"?
Belief language often hides degree. Someone says they believe a claim, but that may mean a slight lean or near certainty. Credencing makes the degree central.
Why Not Just "Probability"?
Probability is essential, but the project also tracks will, identity, social pressure, and the difference between perceived evidence and assigned confidence. Credencing names the human process in which probability, interpretation, and commitment meet.
